Abstract
This study aims to analyze the dual and reciprocal role of the coronavirus on social and political cohesion in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In a situation where Iranian society was facing challenges in the field of social capital before the pandemic, the Covid-19 crisis, as a full-fledged social event, challenged the existing order and at the same time provided a platform for the re-creation of solidarity. This study examined this phenomenon with a descriptive-correlational approach and using a survey method. The statistical population included health managers and officials from the Ministries of State and Health, and the sample size was determined using the Cochran formula to be 192 people. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire with 30 items that measured the positive dimensions (moral aspects, transition to collectivism, restoration of legalism) and negative dimensions (hoarding, lawlessness) of the coronavirus. The data were analyzed using a one-sample T-test and SPSS software. The results showed that the Corona crisis, despite its negative consequences, had positive and significant effects on strengthening social cohesion. Variables such as “transition from individualism to collectivism” (mean 4.35), “restoration of legalism” (mean 4.23), and “positive moral aspects” (mean 3.84) were all significantly (P-value < 0.05) higher than the average. These findings indicate that the Corona pandemic, by strengthening the sense of mutual responsibility, selflessness, social cooperation, and respect for regulations, was able to contribute to the relative restoration of social cohesion and strengthening national solidarity against a common threat.
